Why I Use Tumblr and Not Twitter [Updated]

Welcome. I write for church leaders on topics like strategy and communication. Since this is your first visit, don't forget to subscribe to my RSS feed.

Too much connectedness.

Using Twitter scares the heck out of me. I know my limits. I know that I can easily get addicted to a new web technology, and anything that keeps me on the web longer is not what I’m looking for. In fact, the goal is to get on-and-off as quickly as possible. That’s why I use Tumblr.

Tumblr offers the same easy publishing tools, mini-blog atmosphere, and a followable RSS feed. However, it’s much less addictive because it’s not fashioned as a social-networking site that’s meant to be a bottomless pit of jumping from one Tweater to another.

Move to Tumblr. You can still have that nifty RSS feed in the sidebar, but with Tumblr you can post a whole lot more than 140 characters.

[Update: Tumblr does allow following function. I was unaware until this evening.]

Boyd published a guest post I wrote for his blog about using your blog to build your real-world credibility.

Skellie published a post yesterday about handling multiple projects with sanity.

Brad Ruggles threw up a link to a great animation at deviantART. It’s a good time-killer for a slow Friday at the office.

    Anyhoo, I just started using Twitter and have not really started browsing around yet but will watch out for the bottomless pit.

    Right now I’m using both tumblr and Twitter. Both have their purposes. I’m using tumblr as my personal bookmarking service (possibly monetizing it in the future). I use Twitter to get in touch with the other “Pro” bloggers out there.

    They’re both working great right now. I’m going to use the heck out of them.

    I faced the same dilemma when looking into Twitter. In the wrong hands it could turn someone into a compulsive, obsessive people follower so I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.

    The two plusses for me on Twitter was the fact that I could post “tweets” from my mobile phone via text message (I’m not sure if Tumblr does this or not). The second reason just had to do with how many of the bloggers I follow use Twitter.

    Thanks for the info.

    @Warren - Beware the pit. :)

    @Rudy - Sounds like a plan.

    @Brad - Tumblr will do that, plus emailing posts, Jotting posts, and even a bookmark post that lets you post immediately from any website.
