Sunday Set List - 4/20/08 [Plus More Fun]
Welcome. I write for church leaders on topics like strategy and communication. Since this is your first visit, don't forget to subscribe to my RSS feed.
- Marvelous Light (Charlie Hall)
- How Great is Our God (Chris Tomlin)
- I Will Lift My Eyes (Bebo Norman)
- Jesus Paid it All (Kristian Stanfill)
- Dancing Generation (Matt Redman)
Today was a fun day. Here are some extra highlights.
- The student band played today in place of the regular adult band. The two are very different, as you’d expect, but the student band is incredible in their own right. Plus, they’re a whole lot louder, which is always more fun. Plus-plus, I was the oldest guy on the stage this morning, rather than being the youngest like every other week.
- I wore a hat. Boy, did that tick some people off! Not gonna do that again for awhile.
- Came home and played some XBox with several college and high school guys. I felt really old.
- I went back to the church earlier this evening to clean off the stage for some activities this week and found a nice surprise. Someone found the American flag and the Christian flag and put them back on the stage. Ugh. Since when is it OK to replace the cross with a flag?
- Erica got off of work late and came home completely beat. It gave me an easy chance to be a good husband. Usually, she makes it really hard since she’s always so attentive and diligent. I fixed her a bagel and hot tea and then went to the store to get her some cookies.
- Check out the video from yesterday with Boyd Bettis and the family before a little boat ride.

the whole hat thing is stupid. i’m thinking of preaching with a hat on.
also, i wish i was half as cool as you and boyd with your boat, sunglasses, and the whole “i live in florida and you don’t” vibe.
Ha ha…you mean you’ve had the “flag issue” at your church too?

that guy with you looks like a stud.
@Jason - Florida is incredible…sorry to rub it in.
Jason, I’m not a fan of hat policies, but if it’s something that hinders people’s ability to worship, then it’s a small sacrifice for me to make to keep worship as distraction-free as possible.
Brad, oh yeah. We have a big flag issue. Our church is very close to a naval base here in J-ville, which means we have tons of military who are (understandably) very patriotic. So, the result is that we have a few folks that really want to have the flags on the stage.
I was confused about the hat issue until you clarified that you wore it in worship. That is certainly a hot button for many. It’s stupid really.
A friend of mine in TN stated this lady just left his church. When he asked her what made her leave she stated that it was because the worship leader wore jeans. When jeans hinders your worship of God, something is seriously wrong. (ok, off soapbox!)
I checked the vid. Is it only like 15 secs long?

As I am probably old enough to be a mom or (gasp!) a grandma to you, I will play along with the role here. My observation is that since you wrote #2, after your comments in #1, you were aware of your age, and might have been trying to look “cool” — but you obviously committed a “faux pas”.
I would lovingly roll my eyes and say, “Duh!” about the whole hat issue. IMHO, it’s not just an age issue, it really is a cultural taboo.
Terrace, there’s a fine line between legitimate distractions from worship and silly ones. Some people couldn’t focus if Jesus Himself were standing on the stage in a suit, tie, and penny-loafers. (Of course, Jesus would never wear penny-loafers with a suit. He’s got way better fashion sense than that.)
Glorybeam, faux pas is right. You’re also right about it being more cultural than age driven. I asked a couple college folks about it and they said that it’s disrespectful to wear a hat inside, especially when you’re in a church. Of course, there wasn’t much Biblical or logical reasoning behind their stance other than that it is just “our culture” in America that makes it taboo.
