Goals

I’ve been thinking about setting some specific goals to accomplish. I need them to be specific in scope and timeframe. For example, one goal might be to lose 10 pounds by Christmas Day or read one book each month for six months straight.

You might think that those goals are too easy, but I want to be able to accomplish these goals, not strive and then lose. (How unmotivating!)

So, I need you help. What are some good goals? Be creative.

P.S. I also set some generic goals for myself. Like: write an article for a local publication or take more pictures. I’ve always thought it would be cool to be an amatuer photographer.

Short convo with Erica

Erica: Has Cindy McCain always had bangs?

Me: Huh? I don't know.

Erica: 'Cuz it's not a good look for her.

Erica: You mean you don't know these things?

We all have an obsession.

Twitter is fun. I’ve written about it before. But, if you’re not very techy, you might not know that Twitter only allows 140 characters (letters, numbers, & symbols) when you post to it.

My obsession is this: I try very hard to fill all 140 characters. I consider it a victory when I get it within 3 of the limit. When I say that I try “very hard,” I mean that I revise my posts several times before I submit them, just to make sure they fit perfectly.

Erica, my wife, has an obsession, too. She counts thing. All kinds of things. I’m not 100% sure how it works, but I don’t think she ever counts higher than 5 or 6. She’s able to count higher than that, of course, but she chooses not to. It’s weird.

My mother-in-law has an obsession. It’s cooking insanely good food. I mean crazy-good. I mean slap-your-grandma-good.

My father-in-law has an obsession. He piddles. No, not pee. He is always working on little projects. The only time he sits still is when the family is all together hanging out or he’s sleeping. Now that’s a man with priorities.

My brother-in-law has an obsession. Speaking to crowds about Jesus (a.k.a. preaching). He’s truly obsessed. I think he refers to it as a “calling” or something, but I know an obsession when I see one. (J/K. It’s definitely a calling.)

We all have obsessions. Some of our obsessions are silly (like Twitter). Some of them are honorable (like preaching). Some of them are occupiers (like piddling and counting). What’s your obsession?

Grrrrreat video from Kevin Rose on why startups should happen in a bad economy. I wouldn’t say he’s a visionary, but he’s certainly not an idiot when it comes to this kind of stuff. My mind is running with how his thoughts might effect Updatable and RiverTown Church.

Be careful who you work for.

Before I came to work at RiverTown Church, Danny (RiverTown pastor) shared a little nugget of wisdom with me at lunch. He essentially said the same thing Seth Godin said in the link above, but through the tint of Scriptural truth.

He said, “Who you work for in your twenties will determine who you will be in your thirties.” In my case, he was talking about ministry and the kind of ministry I want to be doing in ten years.

Click the link above. It’s a good article and worth your time to read it if you’re a youngin’.
